Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that leads to a loss of beta cells in the pancreas. These beta cells are part of a cellular complex that produce insulin, an essential hormone that regulates our blood sugar, keeping it within a narrow range, and thus allowing normal bodily functions to occur. To survive, patients must monitor and control their diet, track physical activity, carefully regularly measure their blood sugar levels, and inject the appropriate amount of insulin. But Paul Laikind and his team at ViaCyte are working on a functional cure that involves the use of stem cells which become pancreatic cells that can mature and produce insulin in a normal manner. Paul K. Laikind, Ph.D. has over 30 years of leadership experience in the biotechnology and life sciences industry in San Diego. He currently serves as President, CEO and a member of the Board of ViaCyte, Inc. a leading company in the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Prior to joining ViaCyte, Dr. Laikind served as Chief Business Officer and Senior Vice President of Business Development at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Simple New Test Detects Early Signs of Diabetes

diabetes remedy No Comments »

People with Type 1 diabetes, usually diagnosed in children and young adults, must take insulin injections and watch their diet to keep their blood sugar levels balanced. Diagnosing the disease usually requires taking blood samples, a frightening experience for many youngsters. Researchers in the United Kingdom say they have developed a simple, non-invasive initial test, which requires only a whiff of the patient’s breath. VOA’s George Putic reports.

Know the Signs of Type 1 Diabetes

diabetes remedy No Comments »

Pediatric endocrinologists, doctors who care for children with diabetes, at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock have seen a recent increase in children with more severe cases of Type 1 diabetes. Symptoms may include feeling very thirsty, fatigue, blurry vision, having to pee frequently and/or bed-wetting, feeling very hungry or losing weight (even though your child is eating), yeast infections, diaper rash and/or thrush. Left untreated, children may experience more severe symptoms such as fruity smelling breath, heavy, taxed breathing, vomiting, and confusion. These symptoms can occur quickly and can be dangerous. See your child’s pediatrician if you notice any of these signs or symptoms to ensure your child gets the care they need.
