How to Avoid and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)

diabetes treatment No Comments »

Can we avoid or even reverse or Type 2 diabetes (TD2)?
https://themelburyclinic.co.uk/melbury-metabolic-clinic/
https://www.dietdoctor.com/

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which there is a high level of glucose in the blood stream despite the pancreas producing insulin to bring it down. High blood glucose has a number of serious health consequences; and the problem in type 2 diabetes is not a deficiency of the glucose lowering hormone insulin, but rather a problem with the bodyโ€™s response to insulin- a condition called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is also feature of the “Metabolic Syndrome”. In type 2 diabetes, at least in the early stages, there are high levels of both insulin and glucose in the blood stream.
A common misconception is that type 2 diabetes only affects the overweight and obese. Many doctors now believe, myself included, that type 2 diabetes is characterised by an inability to metabolize or handle the huge quantities of carbohydrates that we eat nowadays. Many of us are just eating way too many carbohydrates for our bodyโ€™s metabolism to handle โ€“ too many carbohydrates in processed food particularly. This overload of carbohydrates is overwhelming our hormones which control the blood glucose level such as insulin and overwhelming our hormones which control hunger such as leptin. This leads to insulin resistance, high blood glucose and high levels of insulin as well as continuous hunger and weight gain.
So how do we avoid type 2 diabetes?
Well, Professor Tim Noakes in the book the Real Meal Revolution gives the scientific evidence that supports the idea that we are eating too many carbohydrates. He explains in this book that although we need adequate quantities of protein and fats in our diet, we donโ€™t actually need carbohydrates at all, because, our liver can make glucose in large quantities if needed from dietary fat and proteins through a process called “gluconeogenesis”. So if there is no obligatory need for carbohydrates in our food, we don’t need to eat them in the quantities that we are – currently doing. Insulin resistance leads to fat accumulation in the liver and pancreas, and this then leads on to diabetes.
So if type 2 diabetes is caused by eating too many carbohydrates, it would seem logical to suggest that one way at least to avoid this condition is to eat fewer carbohydrates – and that means from any source.
In this excellent book, Diabetes Unpacked, Dr David Unwin a GP in the UK describes the spectacular results he has achieved by advising people with type 2 diabetes to eat fewer carbohydrates. Many diabetics in his practice have been able to reduce or even eliminate their medication and put their diabetes into remission.
All carbohydrates even carbohydrates that you might consider healthy such as wholemeal bread, baked potatoes and whole meal pasta are digested and they all enter the blood as glucose. So the logic is this: if type 2 diabetes is characterised by too much glucose in the blood stream, it would make sense to eat fewer carbohydrates to avoid the condition as well as to reverse it. A great resource in addition to these 2 books is dietdoctor.com. This is a website that gives information about how to eat a low carbohydrate diet based on real food. It gives the scientific background to a low carbohydrate way of eating, practical advice and recipes as well as interviews with international experts. So, in summary, type 2 diabetes is characterised by too much glucose in the blood stream; all carbohydrates enter the blood stream as glucose (mainly); and it seems sensible to advise people with type 2 diabetes to eat fewer carbohydrates. In fact, it has been suggested by Professor Tim Noakes, that all of us, could improve our health and avoid T2D in many cases by eating real food, which is naturally low in carbohydrates.

Filmed at the Emerging Science of Carbohydrate Restriction and Nutritional Ketosis, Scientific Sessions at The Ohio State University

An impressive body of scientific evidence over the last 15 years documents long term benefits of carbohydrate-restricted, especially ketogenic, diets. We now understand molecular mechanisms and why they work. Popular books and articles now challenge the advice โ€˜carbohydrates are good and fats are bad.โ€™ Circa mid-19th century urinary ketones were identified in diabetics sealing their toxic label for the next 150 years. Despite work four decades ago showing ketones were highly functional metabolites, they are still misidentified as toxic byproducts of fat metabolism. The vilification of fat by regulatory and popular dogma perpetuates this myth. But the nutrition-metabolic landscape is improving dramatically.

A growing number of researchers have contributed to what is now a critical mass of science that provides compelling clinical evidence that ketogenic diets uniquely benefit weight loss, pre-diabetes, and type-2 diabetes. In the last five years, basic scientists have discovered that b-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the primary circulating ketone, is a potent signaling molecule that decreases inflammation and oxidative stress. BHB has been suggested to be a longevity metabolite, with strong support from recently published mouse studies showing decreased midlife mortality and extended longevity and healthspan. Although type-2 diabetes is often described as a chronic progressive disease, emerging evidence indicates that sustained nutritional ketosis can reverses the disease. There is growing interest in studying potential therapeutic effects of ketosis on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimerโ€™s and Parkinsonโ€™s. There are even reasons certain athletes may benefit from nutritional ketosis and ketone supplements โ”€ debunking the long-standing dogma that high carbohydrate intake is required to perform optimally.

With the support of the well-established Ohio State Food Innovation Center, this conference will bring together the top experts in these fields to share what has been achieved and what remains to be done to advance this exciting field of scientific discovery.

Can a vegan diet reduce the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes? Can a plant-based lifestyle reverse the disease? According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2015, more than 30 million Americans were diabetic and more than 84 million adults were prediabetic. It is likely that this rise coincides with the adoption of the Western pattern diet, which includes a lot of fatty processed foods.

Diabetes.co.uk has vouched for a balanced vegan diet to lower blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, especially in combination with increased physical activity. The University of London conducted a study which showed that a plant-based diet can ease symptoms of depression and other mental health issues in type 2 diabetes sufferers.

Dr. Pamela Popper, Dr. Joel Fuhrman and Dr. Michael Greger have all spoken to a plant-based diet’s effectiveness in managing diabetes symptoms, and even reversing insulin resistance.

Reversing diabetes is a term that usually refers to a significant long-term improvement in insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. This is also known as putting diabetes into remission. In this video, Endocrinologist Dr. Ergin will answer the commonly asked question: is it possible to cure or get rid of diabetes and if so, how to do that.

Diabetes is reversible in some patients. Dr. Ergin, the Founder and CEO of Sugarmds.com, explains which patients are great candidates for possibly reversing diabetes. He also goes over how to get rid of diabetes in the most effective and fastest way. Can just diet, weight loss, and exercise be enough to get cured of diabetes? Is there such a thing as a total cure? Can reversing diabetes be permanent? What is the best way to reverse diabetes? Is there a cure for type 1 diabetes? Is there a cure for type 2 diabetes? Does gastric bypass help cure diabetes? We answer all of these questions and more in this video. Follow us @ www.sugarmds.com. Subscribe and stay tuned for more videos.
